Dot Berry has spent the past 45 years at Piccadilly’s I-55 North location in Jackson, Mississippi, most of that as head baker.

And you’d best believe all that experience and love for the craft is apparent in every bite of her cakes, pies, biscuits and bread.

“Red velvet cake is my favorite. I just love making them,” she says.

This is the only full-time job Berry has ever known. It began in 1974 when her sister ‒ one of several siblings who worked for Piccadilly ‒ encouraged her to apply. She still cherishes the years they spent baking right alongside each other.

“Piccadilly is my home away from home,” says Berry. “I love doing things for people, and I love baking,” she says.

Among her best memories over the years is Berry’s time in Baton Rouge after Hurricane Katrina in 2005. The city’s population doubled virtually overnight as many New Orleans residents temporarily relocated there. Berry relocated, as well, helping Piccadilly’s Baton Rouge locations keep up with a surge of guests.

The circumstances created by the storm were difficult, but Berry says the work was rewarding.

“I’m just a people-type person,” she says. “When I was down there, I met so many different people, and I loved that part.”

She’s spent the past few decades baking for a living, so does Berry find time to bake at home?

“Yes, Lord!” she says. “Everybody knows when Dot Berry makes a cake.”
